1. First impressions count
Graphic design is important to any business as it will help you make a good first impression. If a potential customer first sees you in person, you would do your best to ensure this, wouldn’t you? Sometimes you will have to rely on graphic design to do this for you. Whether it’s through your adverts, social media posts or flyers, you need to ensure you have a professional image. When a customer first hears about your business, they are likely to ‘google’ you, to see if you have a web presence, either through a website of your own, or through social media. Have you googled yourself? What do you find? Have a look and view these first impressions through the eyes of your potential customer.
2. Stand out from the crowd
Great design can help you stand out from the crowd, and from your competition. Your customers will view your professional flyers and advertising and see that you are a credible company who values spending money to ensure you make a good first impression. People always have choice, and you want them to choose you! In the past I’ve seen identical flyers for different companies, just with the company name and information swapped, and logos on vans that are so similar you wouldn’t distinguish them, apart from the name. This is the pitfall of choosing a pre-made logo or flyer design, which are offered by so many online printers etc. You just might choose something that many others have already chosen. We’ve all received multiple identical birthday cards in the past, which is always a giggle, but it’s not so funny if it’s your branding! When you commission a logo or flyer etc from a professional designer, you’ll receive a bespoke design which is yours and yours alone.
3. Credibility
Providing useful content either on your social media or on your website (such as in a blog) gives you credibility. If you can offer valuable advice, hints and tips relating to your field of expertise, your audience will grow to trust you. If you can help with advice and answer their questions, even better! You should ensure this content is branded, so that if it is shared it still brings people back to you. Try to include your website or links to social media so that people can find you easily. Things such as social media templates can really help with this, whether you design your own or commission these from a designer, they will help your social media posts be recognisably yours. Companies that invest in quality graphic design are also more likely to be perceived as trustworthy and reputable; presentation can make or break any business. I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to ensure you make a good, professional impression.
4. Efficiency
Graphic design is so important in ensuring your message is clear and easy to read. Good design can make a flyer eye-catching, it can ensure a customer can find exactly what they’re looking for in a brochure. Good design will make your marketing materials work for you. A picture speaks a thousand words, and your online audience is more likely to share an image than text. Could you use bespoke infographics, diagrams or illustrations to explain something that’s important to your business? I’ve created several infographics for businesses to help share their messages in a clear way - you can check out some examples of these over on my portfolio at https://stephbuncherdesign.myportfolio.com/illustrations
5. Your story
Graphic design can help you tell your story and create your brand. Colour schemes and font choice can help portray an emotion or feeling that supports your message. Although the messages you share from your business will all differ, they should all tell the same story about your brand. Consistency is key, and again I’ll repeat, your marketing materials should all be recognisably yours. Branding is so much more than a logo, it’s the colours, fonts and style of your business as a whole, reflecting your ethos, your values and what sets you apart from the crowd.
